We apologize for the long delay, but the Pigskin Hooligans are proud to announce the award winners from the 2013 Pigskin Hooligans season: 2013 Most Valuable Player Award Winner - Zach Johnston: For the fourth consecutive year Zach takes home the MVP award for the Hooligans. He was lured out of retirement this season and proved he can still dominate the league, tossing a league-leading 28 TD passes on the year. Zach was a crucial part of the Hooligans on offense, and he was equally valuable on defense notching 3 interceptions and serving as a vocal team leader. 2013 Brittany Davis Memorial Award Winner - Bre Taylor: Bre wins the Brittany Davis Memorial Award for 2013, given to the team's most outstanding female player. She had a sensational year for the team in 2013, leading the league with 13 touchdowns. Bre showed great hands all year and tied the Hooligans franchise record for touchdowns in a single game twice with a pair of 4-TD games. She was solid on defense as well notching an interception. 2013 Breakout Player of the Year Award Winner - Bre Taylor: Bre also wins the Breakout Player of the Year Award for her efforts in 2013. The award is given to the most outstanding newcomer to the team. 2013 Defensive Player of the Year Award Winner - Zach Johnston: While Zach usually gets recognized for his offensive contributions as the Hooligans' quarterback, this year he is also recognized for his defense. He led the team in interceptions with 3 on the year, including 2 in the team's crucial 56-52 win over the Pederson Painters that secured a playoff spot. Zach was great all year at chasing down defenders and calling out defensive assignments. 2013 Individual Performance of the Year Award Winner - Justin Litzner: Justin receives the 2013 award for best individual game performance for his play in the team's 93-80 playoff win against the Pederson Painters. On the stat sheet his numbers were impressive with 3 receiving TDs, 2 PATs, and an interception. But what did not show up on the stat sheet was that Justin selflessly lateraled to Bre Taylor for a female TD and later in the game stopped at the 1-yd line to set up another female 9-pt score. Including those plays he accounted for 5 total TDs, and he also had many other receptions and flag grabs in the match as well. 2013 Most Improved Player Award Winner - Dana Ford: Dana receives the 2013 award for the most improved player compared to the last season. In 2012 she played in one game for the Hooligans, notching a few receptions in the team's regular season victory over the Big Boyz. But in 2013 Dana really took her game to the next level, notching 2 TDs and a PAT along with several other receptions. She also made in impact on defense with a couple sacks and some good flag grabs. 2013 Sub of the Year Award Winner - Jessie Barns: Jessie wins the 2013 sub of the year award as he was a tremendous mid-season acquisition for the team. He notched 2 TDs and 4 PATs in his time with the Hooligans, showing his great footwork and speed honed as a former running back for CUAA's football team. Jessie had a ton of receptions throughout the year to move the team down the field, and he also contributed on defense with many flag grabs and a fumble recovery. 2013 Heart of the Hooligans Award Winner - Angela Martin: Angela wins the second annual Heart of the Hooligans award, given to the player that best exemplifies the spirit of the Hooligans. It is often given to players who sustain an injury, and she fits the bill as she sustained a finger injury late in the season that kept her out for the playoffs. Angela notched 3 touchdowns prior to the injury, and she was a key part of the team both on the field and off as a co-captain. She needs only 4 more touchdowns next year to pass the legendary Josh Ulm for the Hooligans' career touchdown mark. Finally, here are this year's award winners for the top 3 individual plays of the season: ![]() Gold Play: Takari Johnson's game-clinching TD catch, 11/20/13 vs Pederson Painters - The Hooligans held a 50-44 lead late in a critical game against the Pederson Painters to secure a playoff spot. The team could not run out the clock entirely, so they looked to a score a touchdown to put the game practically out of reach. The Hooligans were facing a 4th down situation just outside the Painters' endzone, and Takari came in clutch showing good hands to haul in a short TD pass to secure the victory. ![]() Silver Play: Justin Litzner's go-ahead 2pt PAT catch, championship game vs BDB - The 2013 championship game between the Hooligans and BDB was an exciting match, featuring several lead changes. With the Hooligans down by 10 points late in the game, a Bre Taylor touchdown put them down 1 point as they went for the PAT. The team went for 2 to take the lead, and Justin made a sensational diving catch to put the team up 57-56 with 1:30 to go. While the Hooligans did eventually give up a late game-winning score, Justin gave them a great chance to win the game with that catch. ![]() Bronze Play: Karlee Schaus's finger-tip TD catch, championship game vs BDB - The Hooligans found themselves in an early 12-0 deficit in the championship game after giving up two early touchdowns. After two straight empty possessions on offense, the team drove down the field and found themselves just outside BDB's end-zone. Karlee came up with a great finger-tip catch on a low throw to haul in her first touchdown of the season, putting the Hooligans right back in the game. The Pigskin Hooligans are proud of the accomplishments of all the 2013 award winners. This concludes our look at the 2013 season. We will be back in the fall of 2014 to give you full coverage of the team's next championship run. Until then...ROLL HOOLIGANS!

Stay tuned for the awards show as we specially recognize some specific Hooligans for their accomplishments. The 2013 season saw the Hooligans advance back to the championship game for the 4th time in the last 5 years, falling in a close but exciting game. The season was the shortest in known CUAA intramural history with only 3 regular season games per team. Playoffs were limited to only the top 4 teams out of the 6 in the league, making the regular season more critical than normal. Games were played on the football practice fields across the street from campus, the first time games were played around that location since the 2007 season. A mid-November start meant fairly cold weather for much of the year.
The team took fans through quite a roller-coaster ride to make it back to the title game. The Hooligans started out the season scoring their lowest point total in a non-forfeit game since 2006, losing 48-11 to eventual championship game foe BDB. After working out some offensive kinks and making some key signings, the team scored its highest single-game point total in franchise history in a 93-80 playoff win. The unretirement of Zach Johnston was a key development in the offseason, and a softball-heavy lineup gave the Hooligans plenty of 9-point weapons. Besides the team-record 93 points against the Pederson Painters, several Hooligans also tied franchise individual records. Bre Taylor had 4 touchdowns in a game twice throughout the season, tying Angela Martin's single-game Hooligan record, and Zach Johnston tied his own single-game record with 9 passing TDs in a game. Angela Martin inched ever closer to becoming the Hooligan career TD leader, notching 3 on the year to give her 18 for her career and needing 3 more to tie Josh Ulm's mark of 21. Captain Mike Russell made it to 49 games played as a Hooligan this year, leaving him one away from the big 50. Let's take a game-by-game look at this season: Game 1 vs BDB - L 48-11: The Hooligans opened the season with a blowout loss to BDB. Zach Johnston was picked off an uncharacteristic 6 times, and the team's offense could barely get down the field. The 11 points scored was the team's fewest in a non-forfeit game since 2006, when the Hooligans were shut out in the first 2 games in franchise history. Some critics wondered if the team's estrogen-driven offense would work, but a turnaround was soon to come. Game 2 vs Slytherin - W 59-35: The Hooligans went into their next match against Slytherin in a must-win situation to make the playoffs. Zach Johnston rebounded nicely from the previous game tossing 6 TD passes in the game with no interceptions. The signing of Jessie Barns proved to be critical and Bre Taylor emerged as a key target on offense with 3 TD receptions. Game 3 vs Pederson Painters - W 56-52: Still needing a win to guarantee a playoff berth, the Hooligans again came up in the clutch with a 56-52 victory over the Pederson Painters. The game went down to the wire with a late TD catch by new signee Takari Johnson on 4th down proving to be the game-winning score. The victory would give the Hooligans a 2-1 record going into the playoffs, and they wound up with the #3 seed. Game 4 vs #2 Pederson Painters - W 93-80: The Hooligans were given a rematch with the Pederson Painters as their first-round playoff game. The Painters only had 4 players in the game against the Hooligans' 7, but they still proved unstoppable on offense in what turned out to be a wild shootout of a game. The 93 points the Hooligans would score beat the old franchise record of 79, and Zach Johnston and Bre Taylor both tied franchise single-game records with 9 passing TDs and 4 receiving TDs respectively. Game 5 vs #1 BDB - L 62-57: The championship game saw a fitting rematch of the season's opening game between the Hooligans and BDB. The team put forth a much better effort than the first game in a game that featured several lead changes on a cold and snowy field. The Hooligans went up 57-56 with 1:30 left after a Justin Litzner 2-pt PAT catch, and it looked as though they could repeat as champions. But BDB drove down the field and a late Tyler Holloway TD sealed the Hooligans' fate after a good effort. We hope you enjoyed reliving each game of the 2013 season! Check back soon for an overview on the contributions of each individual player that played at least one game for the Hooligans in 2013. The Hooligans' championship game with BDB was no different, as the two teams played a thrilling back-and-forth contest on a snow-covered field. The game featured several lead changes and went right down to the wire, but in the end BDB would emerge victorious 62-57 to complete a 5-0 undefeated season. Tyler Holloway was the hero for his team catching the game-winning TD with around 20 seconds to go in the game. BDB began the game on offense and drove quickly down the field with Brad Kindred connecting with Jeremy Maas for a touchdown. The Hooligans responded with a solid drive picking up the first down, but Zac Hyatt came out of nowhere with a great interception on a pass intended for Bre Taylor in the endzone. The Hooligans' defense nearly forced a 4-and-out, but Tyler Holloway made a critical 4th down catch for BDB that set up a Zac Hyatt TD catch to open up a 12-0 lead. Zach Johnston drove the Hooligans back down the field on the next series, and Karlee Schaus made a great fingertip catch to cut the deficit to 12-11 after Johnston rushed for a 2pt PAT. BDB was forced to convert again on 4th down with Codey Harrison coming up in the clutch, and Jeremy Robinson would haul in a TD pass from Brad Kindred to make the score 20-11. Bre Taylor came up big on the next series with a short catch to knot the game 20-20, but BDB would respond as Scotty Morse hauled in a late touchdown to put BDB up 28-20 at the half. The Hooligans got the ball to start the second half after choosing defense first, and that decision proved wise as Zach Johnston connected again with Bre Taylor to open up a 31-28 lead. Brad Kindred responded by driving BDB down the field and they would score a 9-point touchdown from Jessica Barjaktarovich to reclaim the lead 37-31. Bre Taylor again ran a short pattern and caught a touchdown for the Hooligans, but Jessica Barjaktorvich would once again break free of the defense and find the endzone again to make it 48-40. Zach Johnston found Takari Johnson on a deep pass on the next series, and Takari would use his athleticism and speed to take it the distance for a touchdown. The 2-pt conversion failed, however, and a Zac Hyatt TD catch on the next series put the Hooligans down 56-46 with about 5 minutes left. The Hooligans drove down the field needing a female TD, and Takari Johnson took a short pass and stopped at the 1-yard line which set up a clutch Bre Taylor TD catch on the next play. Justin Litzner made a sensational 2-pt PAT catch to give the Hooligans a 57-56 lead with 1:30 to go in the game. The Hooligans were a defensive stand away from claiming back-to-back titles, captain Mike Russell was fired up, but BDB had other plans. Brad Kindred steadily drove his troops down the field, picking up chunks of yardage and calling timeout with under half a minute to go. With the Hooligans defense mostly on the right side of the field, Brad Kindred looked left and found Tyler Holloway short to take a huge 62-57 lead with about 20 seconds to go. The Hooligans had one last-ditch effort with laterals involving Justin Litzner and Zach Johnston, but the ball ended up out of bounds and BDB would emerge victorious. For the Hooligans, Bre Taylor was sensational tying her own franchise single-game record with another 4 TDs in the game. Zach Johnston had some great quarterback play, finishing with 6 passing TDs and a PAT. Takari Johnson had a long TD catch-and-run and also set up Bre Taylor's last TD by smartly stopping at the 1-yd line. Karlee Schaus had a great touchdown catch for the team's first points. Justin Litzner made the clutch PAT catch to give the Hooligans a late lead and had many other catches. Jessie Barns played solid defense in the game and added a PAT. Valerie Carrillo had some great runs along with some solid defensive pass breakups on PATs. Captain Mike Russell played one offensive series in the second half and mostly served in a coaching capacity. For BDB, Brad Kindred overcame his previous wrist injury to return at QB and tossed 8 passing TDs for his squad. Zac Hyatt made an impact with 2 TDs and an interception in the game. Jessica Barjaktarovich showed her elusiveness with 2 TDs in the match. Tyler Holloway was clutch with the game-winning TD along with a crucial early first-down catch on 4th down. Captain Codey Harrison notched a PAT and also had a crucial first-down catch on 4th down. Corrina Rotondo and Kortney Loar were there to cheer on the Hooligans. The game was officiated by Terrence Wilburn who did a great job reffing games all year for the league. The team finishes at 3-2 after the narrow championship game loss. ![]() Tue, Dec 3 - The Pigskin Hooligans clinched a spot in the championship game for the 4th time in the last 5 years, scoring a franchise record 93 points in a crazy 93-80 win over a short-manned Pederson Painters squad. The Painters put forth a valiant effort despite only having 4 players, and their soccer cleats enabled them to avoid slipping in the mud that plagued the Hooligans all day. But in the end the Hooligans' girls would once again provide the margin of victory with seven 9-point touchdowns in the offensive shootout. The Painters originally began with three players, and the Hooligans chose offense first to exploit the defensive mismatch. Zach Johnston started the game out well, firing a deep pass to Justin Litzner to give the Hooligans an early lead. But the Painters would immediately counter as James Kapanka hooked up on a deep pass with Jay Krause to answer. The Hooligans drove down the field again as Justin Litzner made a long run and selflessly lateraled to Bre Taylor for the 9-pt score for a 17-6 lead. However, the Painters would string together three straight scores as James Kapanka found Jon Pederson for a touchdown, Mikey Erickson came up with a pick 6, and after a fumble on a lateral attempt Mikey Erickson would catch a TD pass to open up a surprising 28-17 lead. The Hooligans refocused on their next trip down the field as Zach Johnston connected with Bre Taylor on a nice slant pattern with Jessie Barns catching the game-tying PAT. The teams traded scores at the end of the half as James Kapanka hooked up with Mikey Erickson yet again while Zach Johnston found Justin Litzner who made a nice juggling catch as time expired. The score would read 34-34 going into halftime. The Painters began the second half with the ball, and James Kapanka led his team down the field finding Jay Krause to reclaim the lead 42-34. The Hooligans answered as Bre Taylor made a great TD catch with a defender all over her. It looked like the game would turn into a battle of who had the ball last, but Jessie Barns came up with a huge fumble recovery to set up a Valerie Carrillo TD to give the Hooligans some separation.
