The 2009 Pigskin Hooligan campaign was the closest the franchise had ever come to taking home the title. The Hooligans finished the regular season 8-2, claiming the #1 overall seed in the playoffs. The team made it all the way to the championship game but fell in a closely contested match with their rival Kidney Stones, finishing at 9-3. One of the key storylines throughout the season was the baseball practice schedule, as for many games the baseball players could only make part or none of the game. When the entire team was present, though, the Hooligans were a force to be reckoned with.
Zach Johnston, Erik Mendoza, and C.J. Luttinen split the majority of the reps at the QB position throughout the year. Billy Kohls, Ryan Noack, and Zane Johnston from the baseball team were dependable receivers and great assets on defense. Brothers Max Joseph and Bernard Joseph were also key parts of the team, scoring most of the team's touchdowns and playing solid defense. Captain Mike Russell recorded several receptions throughout the year and provided leadership and team management during a hectic schedule. For the girls Brittany Davis led the way with 6 touchdowns on the year, still likely a franchise record, and was 4th on the team with 19 receptions. Kelly Howard and Katie Moro also rotated in during the year and helped the team with pass receptions. Stats: Mike Russell (captain) - 8 games played, 5 receptions Bernard Joseph - 12 games played, 0-1 passing, 34 receptions, 11 TDs, 17 PATs, 12 INTs Billy Kohls - 5 games played, 1-3 passing (1 pass TD), 9 receptions, 3 TDs, 4 PATs, 1 INT Brittany Davis - 9 games played, 19 receptions, 6 TDs C.J. Luttinen - 8 games played, 30-40 passing (6 pass TDs, 1 INT), 1 reception Erik Mendoza - 10 games played, 49-87 passing (14 pass TDs, 5 INTs), 3 receptions, 2 TDs, 3 PATs, 1 INT Katie Moro - 2 games played, 3 receptions, 1 PAT Kelly Howard - 6 games played, 1 reception Max Joseph - 12 games played, 8-19 passing (3 pass TDs, 2 INTs), 47 receptions, 15 TDs, 4 PATs Ryan Noack - 11 games played, 14 receptions, 5 TDs, 3 PATs, 2 INTs Zach Johnston - 11 games played, 89-127 passing (22 pass TDs, 4 INTs), 12 receptions, 8 TDs, 3 PATs, 5 INTs, 2 sacks Zane Johnston - 9 games played, 27 receptions, 9 TDs, 3 PATs, 3 INTs, 2 sacks Nov 10, 2009 - And so the Hooligans had come to the finish line. They had already made history as the most successful team in franchise history, and had a chance to top it off with a championship. However the Kidney Stones would have the last word on the 2009 season, as they won a tight one 47-38. The game time had to be renegotiated between the captains, as the baseball practice schedule would have decimated the Hooligans' roster at the original time. Zach Johnston took most of the QB reps in the game, turning in an impressive 17-22 passing performance for 5 TDs. Max Joseph had another solid offensive performance, catching 7 passes for 3 TDs. For the Kidney Stones Tyler Case took all of the QB reps and was nearly flawless, going 15-16 passing for 5 TDs and recording 2 PATs. Martell Buchanan produced every time he touched the ball, notching 3 receptions for 3 TDs. Late in the game, a controversial strip ball by Martell on Brittany Davis turned the tide in favor of the Kidney Stones. Erik Schultz's performance was also noteworthy, as he had 4 receptions for 2 TDs and 3 PATs.
The team still had much to be proud of during the year. Had Zane Johnston been healthy for the playoffs, or captain Mike Russell there to provide direct leadership, who's to say the Hooligans couldn't have won it all? The team finished 9-3 overall for the season, the first winning season in franchise history. The team was exciting to watch and had speedy weapons on both offense and defense. And yet the players and Hooligan Nation overall were still left with a feeling of unfinished business, that "the dream" was still out there to be pursued by future Hooligans... Stats: Hooligans Bernard Joseph - 5 receptions, 1 TD, 1 PAT Billy Kohls - 4 receptions, 1 TD Brittany Davis - 1 reception C.J. Luttinen - no stats Erik Mendoza - 4-8 passing (1 pass TD), 1 reception, 1 PAT Kelly Howard - no stats Max Joseph - 7 receptions, 3 TDs Ryan Noack - 2 receptions, 1 TD Zach Johnston - 17-22 passing (5 pass TDs), 1 reception, 1 sack Kidney Stones Ben Gau - 2 receptions, 1 TD Carolyn Milz - no stats Erik Schultz - 4 receptions, 2 TDs, 3 PATs Martell Buchanan - 3 receptions, 3 TDs Morgan Schwab - 3 receptions, 1 TD Phil Brown - 3 receptions Tyler Case - 15-16 passing (5 pass TDs), 2 PATs Nov 9, 2009 - The #1 Pigskin Hooligans went into their second-round playoff matchup (after receiving a 1st round bye) knowing they were facing a team much tougher than their #5 seed would lead one to believe. They were already without their captain, and the speedy Zane Johnston had been lost for the playoffs due to an injury. Not only that, they found themselves playing with a 6-on-7 disadvantage for the entire match. But the Hooligans showed true grit and fought for a 35-32 win to defeat Shake N' Bake for the 3rd straight match and advance to the championship game. Zach Johnston delivered a clutch performance, going a perfect 16-16 passing with 2 TDs as well as scoring 1 TD himself. Max Joseph hauled in 8 passes on the day to go with 1 TD, and brother Bernard Joseph had a TD to go with 2 INTs. For Shake N' Bake, Cliff Buttermore took all the reps at QB going 17-20 for 4 TDs. Jon Bryant had a huge day after being held off the stat sheet in the last game, notching 4 receptions for 3 TDs. Ricky Genson's performance was also notable, catching 5 passes for TDs and scoring 2 PATs. The team was now poised to play for a chance to win the first title in franchise history, facing rival #2 seed Kidney Stones.

The Hooligans did get some unfortunate news - captain Mike Russell was given doctor's orders to stay home from school due to the prevalence of swine flu in the community, until he could receive the vaccine. As such, this effectively ended his season. But the team fought hard in his absence, with Zach Johnston and Erik Mendoza splitting the reps at QB. Max Joseph had a great offensive day with 6 receptions and 3 TDs, as did Zane Johnston with 5 receptions and 2 TDs to go along with 4 sacks defensively. Shake N' Bake used 4 different QBs, with Cliff Buttermore taking the majority of the reps going 10-15 passing. Ricky Genson had their best offensive day, recording 5 receptions for 2 TDs, and Emily Hans scored a TD on her only reception. Both teams went 20-31 passing overall, but the Hooligans scored 7 touchdowns while Shake N' Bake managed 4.
