While there was no official All Star game for the 2011 season, we have decided to make our own set of teams in anticipation of the upcoming flag football season. Teams were divided into Team Gumm and Team Milner as they were the top two officials from last season. Each team selected at least one player from each of the 6 teams that were in the league. Teams were chosen with 9 males and 2 females as per usual flag football regulations. Andrew Gumm (captain)(no team) - Andrew Gumm headlines the first of two All-Star teams. Known as the Whirling Dervish back in his playing days, Gumm dazzled opponents with an array of spin moves. While lingering knee injuries forced him to end his intramural career, Gumm was a huge help to the 2011 season as a ref. For some games he was in fact the only ref, skillfully managing 4 jobs while often protesting "I'm just one man!". Brad Kindred (The "A" Team) - Brad turned in a solid season for his squad (during the half that they played). He saw time at the QB position and was a solid dual-threat with his speed. Brad also boasts the Concordia intramural record for longest interception return while concussed. Ethan Anderson (Pigskin Hooligans) - Ethan "Shrek" Anderson makes his first All-Star appearance. He won the Pigskin Hooligans' Defensive Player of the Year award for his solid performance at the linebacker position. Offensively Ethan scored 3 touchdowns on the year, making good spin moves and showing good hands. Kevin Krysiak (Dream Team Plus Krysiak) - Kevin was one of his team's faster players and earns an All-Star selection. Despite being slighted in his team's name, Krysiak actually turned in a solid season for them. His speed and athleticism made him an asset on both sides of the ball. Kyle Adoranti (No Name) - Kyle was one of the more solid players for his squad. Though the team didn't finish the entire season, he hauled in several TD passes throughout the year. Kyle is also a pitcher on Concordia's baseball team. Martell Buchanan (I Love It When They Call Us Big Poppa) - Martell's blazing speed made him a lock for the All-Star team. As the owner of multiple school track records he was very hard to stop for opposing defenses. Martell saw time as both a receiver and a quarterback throughout the year. Nick Lyscas (Falcons N' Stuff) - Nick earned an All-Star selection after a solid season. He usually saw time at the quarterback position though he was also used as a receiver. Nick had solid speed which made him a dual threat at the QB position. Robbie Lindley (Dream Team Plus Krysiak) - Robbie was an integral part of his team's championship run. He showed good hands in catching TD passes and likely led his squad in scoring. Robbie reportedly received attention from former Concordia football coach Nathan Robbins at one of his team's games. Zach Johnston (Pigskin Hooligans) - Zach turned in yet another solid season for the Hooligans. He passed for 26 TDs overall and won the team's MVP award for the second straight year. His speed was an asset on both sides of the ball and one could make a case for him being MVP of the league given his importance to the Hooligans. Breannea King (Pigskin Hooligans) - Breannea makes her first All-Star appearance as one of the 2 girls on Team Gumm. She was a true "Warrior" last season, leading the Hooligans in touchdowns with 6 and winning the team's Brittany Davis Memorial Award as best girl. Breannea was a solid athlete on the defensive side of the ball as well, often matching up against opposing guys. Erin Dirobbio (Dream Team Plus Krysiak) - Erin Dirobbio checks in as the second female All-Star on Team Gumm. She had a solid season as part of her team's championship run, notching at least 6 TDs on the year. Erin often served as the team's goal-line back, vulturing carries in the redzone for the 9-pt score. Zach Milner (captain) (Pigskin Hooligans) - Zach Milner headlines the second All-Star team. He won the Pigskin Hooligans' Most Improved Player award after improving at pass-catching and hauling in 4 TDs on the year. His speed makes him a solid threat when he has the ball. Alex Sypniewski (No Name) - No Name captain Alex Sypniewski earns an All Star appearance. He was a speedy player for his squad, notching many TDs on the year. Had the team finished the second half of their season he surely would have added even more stats. Cody Cotner (Pigskin Hooligans) - Cody Cotner's blazing speed makes him a lock for the All-Star team. While his stats were limited due to the team's many forfeit wins his agility made him a key asset on both sides of the ball. Had he not sustained a late hamstring injury in track he would have likely led the Hooligans to a championship. Josh Ulm (Pigskin Hooligans) - Josh Ulm makes his second consecutive All-Star appearance. His great hands and solid route-running made him a critical part of the team. Josh also made a sensational play in the championship game, running through the entire defense of Dream Team Plus Krysiak and nearly scoring a touchdown. Justin Schultz (Falcons N' Stuff) - Justin earns an All-Star berth after a solid season. His 3 prior years of intramural flag football experience made him a key veteran on the team. Justin hauled in a good chunk of TDs on the year and showed good awareness defensively. Rashad Smith (I Love It When They Call Us Big Poppa) - Rashad Smith's lightning-fast quickness earns him an All-Star appearance for 2011. He once trained in Japan and learned to catch a fly with chopsticks, and those skills translated well to the football field. Rashad usually saw time at receiver but played some QB as well and was a solid player defensively. Tyler Holloway (The "A" Team) - Tyler earns the second All-Star appearance for his team. He provided a solid tall target for passes throughout the season with his 6'4" frame. Tyler's stats would likely have improved more had his team finished the second half of their season. Zach Paustian (Dream Team Plus Krysiak) - Zach makes an All-Star appearance after leading his squad to a championship. He handled most of the QB duties for his team on the season and was a solid dual threat with his running speed. Zach's agility also made him a fixture on the defensive side of the ball for his team. Zeb Hancock (Dream Team Plus Krysiak / Pigskin Hooligans) - Zeb's blazing speed made him an easy All-Star selection. His agility was a huge asset on both sides of the ball for Dream Team Plus Krysiak all season until he jumped to the rival Pigskin Hooligans for the playoffs. Had Zeb been successful in leading the Hooligans to a title, it may have gone down in history as the "Immaculate Defection". Karen Greficz (Pigskin Hooligans) - Karen's quickness earns her an All-Star appearance for the 2011 season. She won the Pigskin Hooligans' Sub of the Year award after notching 4 TDs in only 3 games played. Karen also had 2 interceptions in a game vs Falcons N' Stuff which is not only a team record for a girl but also likely a CUAA intramural record. Kelsie Kaiser (Falcons N' Stuff) - Kelsie receives her first ever All-Star selection in 2011. Her tenacity on the soccer field translated well to the game of flag football. Kelsie caught a few touchdowns for Falcons N' Stuff on the year and had a huge run against the Pigskin Hooligans that set up a TD. Congratulations to all of the "unofficial" 2011 All-Stars! This would have certainly been a great game had it actually been played. We look forward to playing with and competing against some of these same players in the upcoming 2012 flag football season.
