Sun, Nov 16 - On October 26, 2006, the Pigskin Hooligans played the first game in franchise history on Rummel Field, the old CUAA soccer field. That match was an 84-0 loss to Erik Schultz's dominant Gamecocks team. But the Hooligans have come a long way since then, and on that very same field the team earned their first win in 2014 in a 65-55 shootout over Bottom of the Fifth. Angela Martin made history by catching her 22nd career TD in the match, passing Josh Ulm to become the Hooligans' new career TD leader. Bottom of the Fifth began the game on offense, and Codey Harrison would connect with Wes Vaughn for a touchdown on the game's opening drive with Adrienne Kanitz adding a 2-pt conversion catch. The Hooligans would counter as Marshall Oetting would lead his team down the field and find Pat Brooks in the endzone with Micah Oetting tying the game with a 2-pt PAT. Angela Martin and Dana Ford would arrive on the scene in the next series, allowing the team to move up to 7 players on the field instead of 5. However Adrienne Kanitz would take a hand-off and make a short run into the endzone to open up a 19-8 lead for Bottom of the Fifth. Marshall Oetting once again drove the Hooligans down the field just outside the endzone, and he would patiently wait until Angela Martin got open to fire a TD strike and tie the game. Codey Harrison would lead his team back down the field, making a long run from the quarterback position to pull Bottom of the Fifth ahead again 27-19. But the Hooligans would tie the game once more as Lukas Mueller showed his speed on the way to the endzone with Dana Ford adding the game-tying PAT. The Hooligans defense would then force a critical turnover on downs on the next series, giving the team 30 seconds left to go for a score before halftime. However Wes Vaughn came out of nowhere to snatch up an attempted lateral by Micah Oetting, ending the threat and giving his own team the ball with 15 seconds left in the half. Adrienne Kanitz would add another reception before time expired, but the score at the half would be all tied up 27-27. The Hooligans would begin the second half on offense and Marshall Oetting would thread the needle through a diving Wes Vaughn to find his twin brother Micah Oetting on the left side of the endzone with Justin Litzner adding the 2-pt PAT catch. Marshall Oetting would then make a huge play on defense as he came up with a pick 6 to put the Hooligans up by 2 scores at 43-27. Bottom of the Fifth would not go away as Codey Harrison would drive his team down the field and find Ryan Vitale in the endzone with Aaron Palmer adding a 2-pt conversion. But the Hooligans would add to their lead as Angela Martin took a short swing pass and made two sensational juke moves, showing her blazing speed to run past the defense all the way to the endzone. Codey Harrison would connect again with Ryan Vitale on the next series for a touchdown, and Wes Vaughn would come up with a huge pick 6 for his team on the next series to make the game close again at 54-49. However Angela Martin would not let her team be denied a victory as she would score her third TD of the game to break the Hooligans' career TD record and put her team up 65-49 with a 2-pt PAT catch as well. Codey Harrison would hook up with Wes Vaughn for one last touchdown at the end of the game, but time would run out and the Hooligans claimed a 65-55 victory. For the Hooligans, Angela Martin would lead the way with 3 receiving TDs to make it to a record-breaking 22 for her career and a PAT. Marshall Oetting had a great game with 6 passing TDs and an interception returned for a TD. Micah Oetting would haul in a receiving TD and 3 PATs on the day. Pat Brooks caught an early TD and added a PAT in the match. Lukas Mueller had a touchdown and showed his speed on several receptions. Justin Litzner added a PAT in the second half and was solid defensively. Dana Ford notched a PAT in the first half. Tyler Baker ran good routes in the game. Captain Mike Russell saw time on a few series in the second half. For Bottom of the Fifth, Wes Vaughn had a solid day with 2 receiving TDs, a pick 6, 2 PATs, and a fumble recovery. Captain Codey Harrison passed for 4 TDs in the game and ran for a score as well. Ryan Vitale added 2 second-half TDs in the match. Adrienne Kanitz had a good day with a rushing TD, PAT, and several receptions. Aaron Palmer showed his speed in the game with some receptions and a PAT catch. Bobby Beauchamp arrived in the second half and ran good routes. The game was officiated by Evan Novak. The Hooligans improve to 1-3 on the season, showing how dangerous they can be with close to their full roster available for the game. Bottom of the Fifth dropped to 1-2 on the season and would go on to play the second game of a doubleheader against league-leading Bottom of the 5th - that recap will follow shortly. The Hooligans will be in playoff action next Sunday, November 23rd at 3:30 as the #3 seed against #2 seeded Bottom of the Fifth in a rematch of today's game. That match will be back on CUAA's football field. The winner of that game will then face Evan Novak's #1-seeded Bottom of the 5th at 4:30 for the championship. We'd love to see a great crowd so bundle up and come cheer on the team as they look to make a late run for the championship...ROLL HOOLIGANS!
