Tues, Nov. 2 - The Hooligans opened their season to much anticipation. The game started well, but the Punishers were too much in the end as an under-manned Hooligans team lost 46-16. The Hooligans jumped out to an early lead as Max Joseph pulled in a touchdown pass from Zach Johnston, putting the lead at 7-0 after a 1pt conversion. After a defensive stop, Sarah Mowery caught a ball on a deflection to give the Hooligans a 9-pt girl TD; the lead grew to 16-0. With 26 seconds to go in the first half, the Hooligans called a timeout as they neared the Punishers' endzone, looking to put up another score and grow the lead before halftime. However, Martell Buchanan intercepted a short pass and took it the distance for the touchdown, changing the momentum of the game.
In the second half, momentum continued to mount for the Punishers. Jordan Marken ran in for one of several TDs on the day to make it a 16-14 game, and the Punishers forced a punt by the Hooligans on their next possession. Another score and 2-pt conversion grew the lead to 22-16, and a failed 4th-down conversion attempt on the Hooligans' next series gave the Punishers a short field to work with. Sought-after recruit Jess Braun made a sensational catch in the back of the endzone for the Punishers to give them 9 points, sliding the required one foot in-bounds. The final score wasn't entirely indicative of the way the game went, as a few late interceptions returned for TDs allowed the Punishers to punch in some extra points late. The Hooligans were missing several players, and will look to rebound tomorrow (Wednesday) at 4pm vs the Phlaming Belly Buttons. Formerly known as ANDREW GUMM last year in a confusing twist because Andrew Gumm was not actually on the team, Brenda Hawkins' squad will open their season against the Hooligans. If stats become available, they will be posted as soon as possible. Box score Half 1 2 Hooligans 16 0 Punishers 8 38
