Sun, Oct 20 - The Pigskin Hooligans opened the 2019 season in Cardinal Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The team faced off against Ryan Abenth’s White Choppas in a rematch of last year’s championship game. Both teams traded touchdowns early, but the Hooligans eventually pulled away behind a franchise-record 6 touchdowns from Hunter Lastacy in a 72-48 victory. Harry Kinney also tied the franchise single-game pass TD record with 9. Hooligans captain Mike Russell won the opening coin toss and elected to take defense first. Grant Steinborn started at QB for the White Choppas and completed a 4th-down pass to Ryan Abenth for a touchdown. Harry Kinney received the start at quarterback for the Hooligans and responded with a deep touchdown shot to Hunter Lastacy to tie the game. Ashley Bartram began blitzing the quarterback on the Choppas’ next series and the Hooligan defense forced a turnover on downs. However, Grant Steinborn came up with an interception and then found Chris Lowe for a touchdown to retake the lead. Captain Mike Russell made a first-down reception on the next drive, and Harry Kinney fired a deep shot to Blake Dean who hauled in the touchdown and 2-pt conversion to put the Hooligans up 16-14. The Hooligans began sending Louis Schimmel to blitz, and his blazing speed hurried the Choppas’ offense and forced another turnover on downs. The offense capitalized when Hunter Lastacy took a short pass and weaved through the defense all the way to the endzone. Lastacy added an interception just before halftime, and the Hooligans headed to the break with a 24-14 lead. The Hooligans started the second half on offense, and Harry Kinney remained cool under pressure firing a deep TD pass to his roommate RJ Bortle. The White Choppas began utilizing short screen passes to counter the blitz and Zack Williams broke a long run with Chris Lowe scampering for a 2-pt conversion. Louis Schimmel made a pair of catches on the next drive and used his speed to pick up more yardage. Hunter Lastacy would eventually haul in his 3rd TD reception of the day, giving the Hooligans a 36-22 lead. Chris Lowe answered with another touchdown run for the White Choppas. Harry Kinney looked to Louis Schimmel again on the next drive and Schimmel ran all the way to the endzone for a score with Ashley Bartram adding the 2-pt conversion. The White Choppas moved into a hurry-up offense and Chris Lowe connected with Grant Steinborn in the endzone for a touchdown. Captain Mike Russell made another one of his 4 receptions on the next drive, holding onto the ball and spinning for extra yardage. Blake Dean caught his second TD of the day in the back of the endzone, tapping his toes to stay in bounds. A 2-pt conversion scramble from Harry Kinney put the Hooligans up 52-36. Hunter Lastacy made an impact with a “pick 6” on defense, helping the team to continue to pull away. The White Choppas responded as Robert Brenay switched to QB and connected with Ryan Abenth for a touchdown. Hunter Lastacy continued his standout game by tying the franchise single-game touchdown record on the next possession. Grant Steinborn led another quick White Choppas drive with Ryan Abenth hauling in another touchdown. Steinborn and Harry Kinney both traded interceptions on the next several drives. As the final minute of the match ran down, Pigskin Hooligan history was made on the game’s final drive. Harry Kinney fired a pass to Hunter Lastacy in the endzone, giving Lastacy sole possession of the franchise single-game record with his 6th TD. The Hooligans secured a 72-48 victory as time expired. Jessica England was present near the beginning of the game to offer support to the team. The Hooligans advance to 1-0 after their win in the season opener.and currently place 2nd in the league based on point differential. Games will not be held next Sunday due to fall break, so we expect the Hooligans to be back in action on Sunday, November 3.
