To conclude the look at the 2011 season, the Pigskin Hooligans would like to announce this year's specially recognized award winners (note - many games played requirements were waived due to the shorter season and forfeit games): 2011 Most Valuable Player Winner - Zach Johnston: For the second year in a row Zach has been named the MVP of the Hooligans. His excellent play at the quarterback position was essential to the team's success all year. He made accurate throws both from the pocket as well as providing a running threat with his legs when blitzed. On the other side of the football his speed and agility made him a solid defender, and he was a vocal leader on defense as well. 2011 Brittany Davis Memorial Award Winner - Breannea King: Breannea is this year's recipient of the Brittany Davis Memorial Award, given to the most outstanding female on the team. It is only fitting that she wins the award, as her team-leading 6 touchdowns on the year tied Brittany Davis' all-time female mark. Breannea accomplished that in only 4 games due to all of the forfeits and would likely have demolished the old record had the season been longer. She also saw some time on defense during the season and played well. 2011 Defensive Player of the Year Winner - Ethan "Shrek" Anderson: Ethan wins the first inaugural Defensive Player of the Year award. He translated his skills as a star linebacker in high school to the flag football field, playing with good positioning and solid blitzes. Ethan was also very good at flag grabbing, a very important asset to the team. He will continue to develop on Concordia's varsity football team and should be a cornerstone of the defense again next year. 2011 Breakout Player of the Year Winner - Cody Cotner: Cody is this year's recipient of the Breakout Player of the Year award, giving to the most outstanding newcomer to the team. He applied his skills as a college receiver to run precise routes and used his blazing speed to make an impact on offense. Defensively Cody's speed also made him a solid defender as he was able to cover any of the opposition's best players. He will only get better next year after he has another season of Concordia varsity football experience under his belt. 2011 Most Improved Player - Zach Milner: Zach receives the Most Improved Player award for the 2011 season. He showed improvement in catching the football this season, making him more of a threat in the passing game when combined with his blazing speed. Zach scored 4 touchdowns on the season including a clutch game-tying score at the end of regulation in the 54-54 tie against Falcons N' Stuff. On the other side of the football he improved at flag grabbing, making him a more solid defender. 2011 Sub of the Year Winner - Karen Greficz: Karen is this year's recipient of the Sub of the Year award, given to the most oustanding player who did not begin the year on the team and played in 3 or less games. She played in exactly that 3-game mark and recorded 4 touchdowns on the year, tied for second on the team. Karen also had two interceptions in the 79-42 win over Falcons N' Stuff, one which she returned for a 9-pt touchdown. This year we are introducing a new set of awards for the best plays of the 2011 season. The award will go to the player(s) primarily involved in making the play epic. Here they are: Gold Play: Josh Ulm's long catch-and-run in the championship game, 12/9/11 vs Dream Team Plus Krysiak Hooligans QB Zach Johnston tossed a short pass over the middle to Josh Ulm towards the end of the first half of the game. Johnston called out to him to be sure to hold onto the football, but he did much more than that. Josh proceeded to run through the heart of Dream Team Plus Krysiak's defense, somehow evading flag grabs and picking up yards. Finally the defense just jumped on him to bring him down, tacking on additional yardage. Silver Play: Zach Milner's game-tying touchdown catch at the end of regulation vs Falcons N' Stuff, 11/9/11 The Hooligans trailed 48-42 with less than a minute to go in their regular season match with Falcons N' Stuff. A swearing penalty on the opposition moved them to mid-field and a few short passes moved them just outside the endzone. With time ticking down, the team scrambled to the line and as time expired Zach Milner came up with a huge touchdown catch to tie the game and force overtime. Bronze Play: Cody Cotner's touchdown pass to Robert Myers off a trick play, 11/21/11 vs Falcons N' Stuff The Pigskin Hooligans opened up the playbook in their historic 79-42 rout over Falcons N' Stuff. With the team on offense and driving towards the endzone, Cody Cotner wound up with the football in his hands after a few laterals. While he was recruited as a receiver, Cody showed his versatility by firing a tight spiral to Robert Myers for a touchdown pass. The Pigskin Hooligans would like to congratulate all of our award winners on their accomplishments! It's been a great season and next year very well could be the championship year. ROLL HOOLIGANS!
