With the roster set for the upcoming season, let's take a look at the team the Hooligans will field this year:
- Mike Russell, senior (5th yr): Mike has been a Hooligan lifer. He took over the captaincy of the team from Michelle Baumgardner in 2007 after playing in 2006 and has assembled a roster every year since. Many a recruit (well, actually only Brittany Davis) has been swayed by his epic "recruiting speech". While Mike has yet to find the endzone in his career, he comes into the season much more conditioned after having played ultimate frisbee this fall. As a grizzled veteran, he looks to finally go out a winner and score that elusive first touchdown this year. - Bernard Joseph, sophomore: Bernard is a returning Pigskin Hooligan. He was a dominant player last year for the Hooligans and could out-jump anyone in the league. He then took his talents to Concordia's varsity football team this year where he played wide receiver and defensive end. Bernard will serve as the Hooligans' one allowed "pro" player as he has collegiate football experience. Upon signing with the Hooligans, he had this to say: "Join us or lose." - Max Joseph, senior: Max will join brother Bernard as a returning Pigskin Hooligan this season. Max was also a dominant player last year as his jumping ability and speed made him a great target at receiver. He also put in some time at the quarterback position, earning himself the nickname "Black Favre" with his high lofting passes. The Joseph brothers will once again be a dangerous combination. - Zach Johnston, grad student: Zach is the fourth returning Hooligan this season. After finishing his baseball career at Concordia, Zach came back for grad school and as such is eligible to play intramurals again. Zach brings a great deal of speed to the Hooligans, and without the time conflicts that baseball practice often caused last year he should be much more available. Zach had this to say upon signing: "Let's not lose in the championship game again." - Billy Kohls, senior (5th yr): Billy is the 5th and final returning Hooligan this year. Billy also brought a great deal of speed to the Hooligans last year, and like Zach Johnston he should be more available without the baseball practice time conflicts. Captain Mike Russell made sure to remind him about being a Hooligan in Ethical Decision Making, and Billy seems to be highly motivated for the season after having finished his Concordia baseball career. - Zach Milner, freshman: Zach will be a newcomer to the Pigskin Hooligans this year. He brings some speed and expects to be a Charles Woodson-type safety. Zach has played in the Ann Arbor Ultimate Frisbee League, so he has experience playing in a competitive environment and should fit in nicely. - Dan Maske, senior: Dan had been recruited by the Hooligans before, but as much as he wanted to play he never had the time. This year, Dan approached captain Mike Russell near the beginning of the school year and stated that he wanted to play for the Hooligans this year. Dan will bring a steadying veteran presence to the team. - Josh Ulm, freshman: Josh is another newcomer to the Hooligans this year. He played on the ultimate frisbee counterpart, the Frisbee Hooligans, this year and was highly motivated to join the drive for the flag football season. He could see some time at QB or possibly the offensive line. - Steve Lestock, senior: Steve is new to the Hooligans this year but brings prior flag football experience. Steve was a member of the Two Dollar Bill team that upset the highly-favored Blue Angels of Bret Counts in the playoffs back in 2008. Steve also participated in the Frisbee Hooligans this year. He has cross country experience as well and should be a solid veteran addition. - Thuy Phan, senior: Thuy mentioned to captain Mike Russell last spring that she had interest in playing flag football this year. Although a newcomer, Thuy brings intramural experience having been one of the more coordinated members of the Two Dollar Bill IM volleyball team in the past spring. She also participated in Concordia's dance team for several years, and she might just find herself dancing in the endzone this year. - Sarah Mowery, sophomore: Sarah expressed interest in playing flag football last year, but was unable to find a team. Captain Mike Russell took note of this and was able to make an early start to the recruiting process for this year. Sarah brings good catching ability to the team, and she also participated in the Frisbee Hooligans this year.
