Thurs, Dec 9 - The Pigskin Hooligans were well-represented in the All-Star game as flag football season officially came to a close Thursday. Zach Johnston and Josh Ulm represented the Hooligans on Team Choi, while Captain Mike Russell was a late addition to Team Gumm. Team Gumm started on offense, and Hooligan Zach Johnston immediately made his presence felt with an interception. After a few crazy lateral plays, Johnston found Bri Sonnenberg in the endzone for a quick 9-pt girl score. Team Gumm would answer as Tyler Case led his team down the field and found Kevin Hohnstadt in the endzone. Johnston moved Team Choi down the field again and this time found Justin Litzner in the endzone; they converted a 3-pt play as well to go up 18-8. Team Gumm had an answer as Hohnstadt caught another score and Phil Brown tapped his toes in bounds on the 2-pt conversion to keep it close, 18-16. Team Choi would manage to score two more times before half including a Zach Johnston TD on a few laterals with Justin Litzner, and the halftime score was 34-16.
In the second half, Team Choi continued to assert itself offensively with another score to go up 40-16. Team Gumm found some life, however, as Tyler Case scrambled from the QB position for the TD and Mike Russell used his knees to haul in a 2-pt conversion pass. Andrew Gumm nearly had a game-changing interception on the next series, but Team Choi marched down the field and Bri Sonnenberg hauled in yet another TD which would push the score to 51-24. Team Choi was not done scoring as Hooligan Josh Ulm hauled in his second TD catch of the day and Zach Johnston added the 3-pt conversion to make it 60-24. With time running out, Team Gumm wanted to get at least one more score in to make the score somewhat more respectable. They used the sidelines effectively and were forced to use a timeout just short of the endzone. Andrew Gumm wanted to score a touchdown. Bri Sonnenberg cried out "Gumm hasn't scored a touchdown since the first grade". That may have touched a string in Tyler Case's heart as he hooked up with his Punishers teammate to give Gumm a TD and make the score 60-30. Team Choi would not score with 1 second remaining and they came away with the win. For Team Choi, Josh Ulm finished the day with 2 receiving TDs, 1 passing TD, and an interception for Team Choi. Zach Johnston passed for who knows how many TDs on the day as well as recording 2 picks. Justin Litzner recorded a TD, Ryan Burmeister had a TD, and despite being the only girl Bri Sonnenberg showed she can play with the boys with 2 TDs. Sam Choi was the official captain but had to ref the game. For Team Gumm, Mike Russell had 2 receptions including the 2-pt conversion and a flag grab of Hooligans teammate Josh Ulm. Tyler Case took the reps at QB, and Phil Brown and Paul Neumeyer had many key receptions. Kevin Hohnstadt could only stay a half but scored the 2 first-half TDs, and Andrew Gumm had several long gains and the late TD. Both teams were significantly undermanned as many on either roster didn't show.
