Sun, Nov 9 - The Hooligans put forth a much-improved effort in their third match of the season, a rematch against league-leading Bottom of the 5th. The game was back-and-forth and featured a great deal of offense, but while the Hooligans managed to avoid turning the ball over they still fell in a shootout 64-59. Bottom of the 5th featured a vicious pass rush and scored every time they had the ball while the Hooligans scored every time but one, and that single turnover on downs would be the difference in the ball game. Bottom of the 5th won the coin toss and elected to start the game on offense. Jeremy Maas would break a huge run from the quarterback position for the first score of the game, but Marshall Oetting would intercept the 2-pt conversion attempt for the Hooligans and nearly ran it back for 2. Marshall Oetting would then fire a well-placed deep ball on the next series to twin brother Micah Oetting to knot the game up 6-6. Jeremy Maas would find Zeb Hancock on a short dump-off to make the game 12-6, but again the Hooligans intercepted the 2-pt attempt as Dana Ford came up with the pick. The Hooligans would take the lead as Marshall Oetting would fire a deep pass to Tyler Baker for a touchdown and Humphrey Ihejirikah would show good hands catch the 2-pt conversion to make it a 14-12 game. The Hooligans nearly forced a turnover on downs on the next series but Jeremy Maas would find Alex Sypniewski for a deep TD strike, and Marshall Oetting would answer by finding his brother Micah Oetting with Justin Litzner adding a 2-pt PAT. Jeremy Maas would lead his team down the field once more before halftime finding Alex Sypniewski in the endzone, and he would run in a 2-pt PAT himself to make it a 26-22 lead at the half for Bottom of the 5th. The Hooligans would get the ball to start the second half but Bottom of the 5th would force a critical turnover on downs defensively. That turnover would lead to Jeremy Maas finding his brother Jacob Maas in the endzone for both a touchdown and 2-pt conversion to make the score 34-22. The Hooligans switched to Micah Oetting at quarterback and he would connect with Humphrey Ihejirikah for a touchdown to make it 34-28. Jeremy Maas would answer as he connected deep with Shane Wilson for another TD strike, and Marshall Oetting would step back in at QB finding Tyler Baker deep through a hole in the defense. Jeremy Maas continued to show his dual-threat ability on the next series as he ran from the QB position for his second TD of the day, but the Hooligans would continue to stay within a possession as Micah Oetting found his twin brother Marshall Oetting to make it a 50-42 deficit. Jeremy Maas found Alex Sypniewski for the third time in the game, and Micah Oetting again would find twin brother Marshall Oetting with a Justin Litzner PAT making the score 56-50. With about 1:30 to go the Hooligans looked to make a defensive stop and get the ball back, but the speed of Zeb Hancock would prove to be too much as he broke into the open field off a short pass and made his way to the endzone. Micah Oetting would find Dana Ford late for a 9-pt touchdown, but time would run out and the Hooligans would fall 64-59. For the Hooligans, Marshall Oetting had a great all-around day with 2 receiving TDs, 4 passing TDs, a defensive INT, and a PAT. Micah Oetting registered a similarly solid statline with 2 receiving TDs and 4 passing TDs. Humphrey Ihejirikah continued to be sensational moving the Hooligans downfield as a receiver, notching a TD and a PAT in the match. New signee Tyler Baker notched 2 touchdowns in the game, showing good hands and an ability to get open deep. Dana Ford notched a late touchdown in the game and also had an interception. Justin Litzner played well on both sides of the ball in his season debut with 2 PATs and 2 sacks. Captain Mike Russell took a lateral for a solid gain in the match and also had a flag grab. For Bottom of the 5th, Jeremy Maas continued to lead his team notching 7 passing TDs, 2 rushing TDs, and PAT in the match. Alex Sypniewski had 3 receving TDs and a PAT in the game. Zeb Hancock showed his great speed with 2 TDs on the day. Jacob Maas hauled in a receiving TD and 2 PATs in the contest. Shane Wilson had a deep touchdown reception in the second half. John Pesta made a celebrity appearance for his team with a PAT in the game. Chris Taylor along with Joel Lantigua and his brother were there to cheer on the Hooligans. The game was officiated by Herman Mason and Virgilio Burgo. The team drops to 0-3 on the season for the first time since 2008 while Bottom of the 5th improved to 2-0. Bottom of the 5th would go on to play the second game of a doubleheader against Bottom of the Fifth, a bonus recap of that game will follow shortly. Right now the Hooligans are scheduled to conclude their regular season against Codey Harrison's Bottom of the Fifth squad on Sunday, Nov 16 at 3:30. The match will be played on CUAA's old soccer field due to the unavailability of the football field next weekend.
